From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Manx National Heritage claim that Peel Castle was built by the Vikings in the 11th century , referring quickly to the red sandstone walls as the castles fortification. This is entirely untrue as the viking fort was wooden and the remains had to be excavated from underground. The Peel Castle we see today was constructed in the 14 th century long after the Vikings had left. The stone tower is of Celtic origin.
